About Us
Advancing the use and success of worksite health centers and direct contracting for health care.
The National Association for Workplace Health Care (NAWHC) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to advancing employer-contracted and managed onsite, near-site, shared, mobile and virtual centers We support the professionals who plan, build, and operate these centers — from employee health and wellness centers to occupational health clinics and employer-sponsored advanced primary care — across North America and beyond.
NAWHC is the only national organization representing both purchasers and providers of workplace health care. Our community includes employers, vendors, benefit advisors and health care leaders with a shared goal: improving employee outcomes, controlling costs, and expanding access through worksite health centers and employer direct primary care.

Understanding what are Worksite Centers and Direct Contracting
Onsite clinics managed by or contracted to a vendor or provider partner by employers may be inside, attached to, or outside, but adjacent to, an employer’s location. They may offer:
Only first aid and emergency care, worksite injuries and illness, as well as occupational health services
Only preventive care and wellness services
Primary care services
Advanced primary care and chronic disease management services
A total worker health menu of occupational health, behavioral health, primary and chronic care services.
Clinics that offer care beyond occupational health are often called “health and wellness centers” or have a brand name, i.e. “Lifespan Center”.
Near-site clinics are facilities that are outside the employer’s location, but conveniently located for employees and their dependents to access services. Only eligible employees and others of the sponsoring employer may access the near-site clinic. They may offer the same categories of services as described in the “Onsite Clinics” description.
Shared or multi-employer clinics are typically offered by a clinic vendor or local health provider to area employers for a membership or subscription fee for each employee or dependent who would have access to the facility. These are attractive to employers, especially those with small workforces or remote workers who don’t have the capital or space to support their own onsite or near-site centers.
An occupational health clinic is owned and operated by providers and vendors and is located outside and some distance from an employer’s location. It serves multiple employers who need emergency, first aid, workplace illness, OSHA, Worker Comp and travel medicine services. These clinics do not typically offer other types of services.
Direct contracting is a benefits strategy which allows an employer to contract directly with a high quality provider or vendor for services such as primary care, behavioral health, disease management, Centers of Excellence, ambulatory surgery, imaging, physical therapy and other ancillary services. Direct contracting removes the need for an employer to work with or under the limitations of other intermediaries and allows for cost savings, accountability, cost transparency, access and customized benefits for an employer. This may or may not involve a worksite clinic.
